Progression, performance improvements and bug fixes
Faster » Devlog
Hi all,
I added a new feature to Faster where you unlock the ability to start at a later level. How it works is this:
- If you reach level 10, you unlock the ability to start at level 5.
- If you reach level 15, you unlock the ability to start at level 10.
- etc.
This should "get you up to speed" quicker if you're already good at the game.
This version also has big improvements for performance, and fixes a couple of bugs, including the bug where the tunnel would show the pink energy effect even though you can't graze energy from the tunnel.
I've also re-enabled the Linux version with some possible fixes. If you try it, could you please post a comment to say whether it's working for you, and what the spec of your computer / distro and version of Linux is? Thanks!
Enjoy!
Kevin

linux is def getting closer to playable, but on the linux build itself im still seeing a few major bugs:
- there's pretty significant flickering still
- the mouse isnt being recentered and can go onto my second monitor. this also means that i can sometimes get stuck in a corner of the arena where im unable to move back to center
- my display's refresh rate only shows 60hz options when my display is running at 120hz. it also seems that it may actually be running at 120hz, despite the menu text?
also, idk if its soemthing you're wanting to support but i tried running the windows build using proton experimental and noticed the following differences from the linux build:
- the refresh rate issue from above isn't present; the options seem to be listed correctly
system info:- the flickering from above isn't present
- the mouse issue from above is still present
- the game's performance is great before completing the first stage, but absolutely tanks after that; even the menus lag until the game is restarted
nixos 23.11 with amdgpu driver and plasma 6/wayland (can provide nix config file for replication if needed)

i7-10700
all of the above was tested in fullscreen, windowed, and borderless windowed (using plasma 6's "fullscreen" option) modes
Thank you for this excellent detail! The proton stuff is really interesting. The flickering is caused by the tunnel shader, and I think I need to simplify that a bit. I'm off travelling at the moment but I will look at these when I get back in a couple of weeks.
very glad to have the ability to start at later levels! i was wondering how you intended to handle it - i had the idea that you could start at the highest level multiple of 5 you were able to reach without taking a single hit.
oh, does this have the fix for the mouse not being captured? i hate having to reset my cursor position between every level so it doesn't go onto my other monitors lol
If you have time, could you detail your setup (OS, computer spec) and how to replicate the bug? Are you running windowed or fullscreen? Thanks!
